Finally posting about this amazing evening that was held during the recent Texas Antiques Week in Round Top, Texas.

Just look at this group of creative women…I am so grateful I was asked to be a part.

Beauty and refreshment at every corner. Lovely programs and “Jesus and coffee” pencils..perfect;

Most important, this meeting of sisters, dreamers & makers, hosted by Tara Royer Steel of Royers Pie Haven, was cloaked in prayer.

gatheringprayer

{Thank you Merritt Johnston for this beautiful prayer…what a gift}

The setting was beautiful..that girl Tara and her team have such a way creating an EFFORTLESS, casual yet so beautiful spread and atmosphere! After a crazy week I felt myself just exhale and relax the moment I arrived.  Isn’t that beauty should do to us?? Inspire, relax, comfort.

Gatheringdecor

The precious Randi Hamlyn of One Fine Day shown below … did so much of the organization and work for this event..such a sweet spirit.  And that camera.. I didn’t even know such working cuteness existed…what a great idea for name tags!

RandiTheGathering

To see God give birth to something in Tara’s heart for an event like this and watch her be faithful and step out in faith and DO IT, was amazing!

Thegatheringblondies

Here Tara is pictured above with the beautiful Paige Hull of the Vintage Round Top and Pamela Hamza of Stuck on the Word. And below with more beautiful ladies.  THOSE FLOWERS Y’ALL. AND THE CAKES…not only did we have pie but there was CAKE!

gatheringcakes

Beautiful cakes from the Bake Shoppe & Cafe in Cypress, Texas.

TheGatheringladies2015

So what happened besides a pretty setting and pretty tables, wonderful women and food.

Well there was amazing worship by Debbie Forrest Byrd

debbieforrest

…it was good so good…and honestly got me in a much needed place for the stress of the week. Follow Debbie’s facebook page to hear the song she wrote from the event coming soon!

And then various women spoke…specifically these women below including me which was scary (I took makeup remover pads because I just knew I would ugly cry but then I didn’t, strange)..we just spoke about our creative journey and the story God is writing in each of our lives.

thegathering2015speakers

{Speakers from back row: Tara Royer Steele, Paige Hull of Vintage Round Top, Andrea Morris from the Shop Gnomadic Fashion Truck, Elizabeth Tooley, Dr Karen Royer, then me and to my left is Randi Hamlyn; bottom row from left Brandi Harper from Spellbound, Pamela Hamza and Lisa Fields from Lucky Star Art Camp)

We spoke about the good and bad. And He was glorified I think.  I hope.  I know I left feeling encouraged and less alone.  Isn’t that what the church is about…community, encouraging, building up, pointing to our Creator and Savior and leaving us wanting more and to be better stewards of our time, talents and dreams.

gatheringElizTara

And THEN THIS GIRL Elizabeth Tooley BROUGHT it at the end with the humor AND the word about how at the end of the day as much as we love to talk about what we do or want to do or could do…. we ARE NOT JUST WHAT WE DO…we are first called to LOVE PEOPLE.  SO GOOD.  Sometimes us creatives feel we must DO DO DO and produce and create and this reminder about LOVING PEOPLE was so spot on to round out the night. You don’t have to have a business or a “thing” it’s okay.  God calls us to different things and seasons but ALL TO LOVE.

Thank you Tara and all of the sponsors and donors that worked hard to make this event happen…follow The Gathering Round Top on instagram and facebook for updates on future dates!

OH AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST…shout out to Dixie Ray Photography for the amazing images…you are pure sunshine and old soul wisdom and beauty Dixie!

True Blue’s Grand Opening Day

Well it finally arrived and y’all it was special day…after months of talking and planning with the owners, Cindy & Brian Taylor, and sketching (or having this amazing woman do the sketching), sourcing, researching, planning, planning, sometimes crying…being excited..being scared, praying, working and working…it all finally came together because so many worked so hard.  The Taylor’s amazing friends and family and some of my friends and of course precious Nana and my kids…all pulled together and Sunday we opened our doors!  And the community has been so warm and excited for us…thank you readers and clients that drove from afar and friends and family for cheering us all on!

True Blue Home *update*

Things are moving fast and exciting on the new store…our opening is planned for Sept 27th (more details to follow)! The historic building is in downtown Chappell Hill, Texas…near Brenham.  Chappell Hill is right off (and I do mean directly) off Hwy 290, the highway that connects Houston and Austin! So this is a major route for many Texans and this tiny town is such a hidden gem.  This area is known as the Birthplace of Texas and is so rich in history. In fact when I first moved to this area 18 years ago as a newlywed we lived in this tiny town and I worked at the nearby state park and museum just a short drive down the road. SO when people ask “why a store in Chappell Hill..it is so tiny?”  Well the answer is simple…Chappell Hill, Texas is special!

Screen Shot 2015-08-05 at 12.20.00 PM

Screen Shot 2015-09-04 at 2.16.54 PM

For the past few months the owner of the building has been transforming the space and it is finally coming together! New solid glass windows, white trim and blue doors coming below . . . I can’t wait to see our logos and branding on the glass!

IMG_8913

Inside the original breadboard ceilings have been sanded and conduit for the new lighting added, love those old ceilings.

IMG_8919

We added a shiplap wall with barn doors near the back for a small storage space.

IMG_8928

The owners handpicked the old cypress doors from a special place in Louisiana…we may be “importing” other salvaged pieces from our Louisiana source so stay tuned on that…

IMG_8920

And probably our favorite feature….the brick wall..oh how we love that wall. The opposite wall we clad in shiplap and it is painted white..that wall was an old rock and we felt like it needed covering for stability..the shiplap also gives us a place to display and nail into without damaging the integrity of the building.

IMG_8926

And now, with floors refinished, shiplap painted and ceilings painted fresh! I love that they left the duct work exposed and conduit showing. I can’t wait to see all of our product that has been in storage in this gorgeous space..I mean what a backdrop.  I cant wait for the store counter to be in stalled and the lighting.

Screen Shot 2015-09-04 at 9.01.51 AM

We will have six large brass pendants in the main space as well additional lighting.  IN FACT, the big new is that . . .

We are officially going to be a Visual Comfort lighting stockist! Chandeliers, pendants, lamps and more!

tbhlightselements

We will have an assortment of their amazing product including lamps, chandeliers, pendants and sconces and we will also be able to special order.  I have worked with Visual Comfort a long time and its so exciting that customers and clients  will be able to see it locally without having to drive into Houston…the finishes are so amazing it will be a treat for everyone to see this lighting in person! So keep checking the website here for more details and join the mailing list so you don’t miss any info about the opening and previews!

A New Venture

The past year has been full of changes for our family and my business. I have been overwhelmed with love and grace through this blog and from you, the readers, as I have shared some of my life’s hardest moments. So its only fair and normal I would be excited to share this new chapter. An exciting blessing! Good news!

truebluebistro

Almost all of my life I have dreamed of dabbling in retail, and finally after months of discussion and planning I am thrilled to announce a new venture with some wonderful people. I am collaborating with friends Brian & Cindy Taylor to open a new store called True Blue Home in Chappell Hill, Texas, this fall! Brian & Cindy have owned property in the area for years and have a deep love for the community. I lived in Chappell Hill over 15 years ago when first moving to this area as a newlywed. So I feel I am coming full circle in some respects as well. And the Taylors’ passion for the community and doing something in this historic downtown are both contagious and inspiring. Brian and Cindy are both CPAs with a business brain but also a love of all things Southern and local and special. To put it simply. They have heart and style. They are originally from Louisiana what more can I say?!

They will be owners and operators of the store and I will be creative director/consultant/curator/stylist/buyer etc…

Cindy has great taste and Brian does too wait until you see some of the salvage pieces he will be bringing to the store. So they do not really need to have me but I am sure glad they want me and are giving me this opportunity!

TBHrendering1

And by curate and collaborate I mean every detail, inside and out. I can’t wait to share with you about this process.

Like the idea boards (inspiration from Schumacher, LS Slipcovers, Miss Mustard Seed, Les Indiennes, Curious Sofa and more), buying and planning! And yes we will have items that are not only blue and white. But you will definitely be able to find lots of blue and white in our store!

trueblueinspire2 (1)

And of course branding…more on that later for sure.

Details like do we do check drapes or blue and white floral?

tbhrend2

Renderings with professionals like the amazing Jane Gianarelli.

So the next weeks will be full of posts about what we will be doing and details on opening…we plan to open during Round Top Antiques Week (Late September). The True Blue Home website will be fully working in early September and we are already on Instagram @truebluehome so be sure and follow us there and on Facebook!

TBHextrend

So there it is…welcome to True Blue Home y’all! Can you even believe how God can make beauty from such ashes? Of course you can because many of you have seen it over and over. When one of the toughest times in one’s life can bloom into something new. Not better, not replacing the other but just another chapter, another door. And yes I will keep doing design work and my own Holly Mathis Interiors projects but I will be doing less online which is a blessing while my kids are young (less computer time is a good thing I am learning) and I will be driving in the city less and near my children more! And I know you all understand and support that even more than good shopping right!?!;;

Louisiana cottage & visit

I have a new project in Louisiana.  I have shown snippets of the fabrics and Round Top purchases over the past year or so it’s not exactly new but it is finally in the building stage…and I recently made a visit. Excited to share!

marla1

This home is part craftsmen cottage part Acadia and all charm with brick floors and high ceilings and salvaged beams going up in family room. My client grew up in a home with brick floors and says they are so easy.  I love them already!  Old St Louis brick. Can’t wait to see them clean and waxed.  And that center hall…makes my heart go pitter patter. As do the low windows!  Once the bevelo lanterns go up it will be a Southern trinity with the moss outside!

marla2

As many of you know, working in South Louisiana is more fun than work. So excited about this project because it’s in the same town as one of my favorite families ever. You can see their home here. We finally got her window treatments finished and they look so good and I finally got to see her beautiful slips from LS Slipcovers!

guidryslips

Good job Laura and Nathan!

guidrykitchen

I very best part was finally getting to meet this sweet girl, their newest and most beautiful addition!!

IMG_8563

Then I headed to Baton Rouge to see my girl Melisse, purveyor of prints and fine antiques!

melisselavisit

We def need a stickie stick before another adventure! Seriously time with this girl is always good for my soul and fun(she is always good for some Suzanne Sugarbaker trivia) but productive professionally too, its a blessing to have friends who are experienced in the field and so knowledgable..I am so proud of all of her hard work including work with One Kings Lane!  So if you can’t make it to Round Top or Baton Rouge you can shop her on OKL!

image1

And after lunch at “her club” we walked over to the Old Capitol just to look around . . . she knows I am fascinated with all things Huey P. Long!

LAtripgovoffice

and what did we happen upon, not only a ton of Long history …but an A. Hays Town exhibit!!! I might have squealed..dorky I know but it was perfect timing.

haystowncollage

They had his t square, his wood box he carried pigments around in to clients home to mix colors, great photos and of course blueprints.

mrtownexh

It was nerdy design girl heaven.  What a treat! Especially to get to see with Melisse and hear her tidbits and local stories about this wonderful man! I am sure many of you have this book!

Screen Shot 2015-08-11 at 1.47.14 PM

Growing up in Texas and traveling to Louisiana, I was influenced by his work before I even knew it…now when I see it I can put my finger on it and appreciate his influence and genius.

Screen Shot 2015-08-11 at 2.05.03 PM

So it was hot time in July but a wonderful trip to one my favorite places!  So much hospitality, good food and great people down there! Although a new build in July is pretty darn hot Ms Marla, y’all are worth it!!  Louisiana is special to me for so many reasons, some I don’t even understand….but I know I love the people, landscape and history so very much.

A holy hope

A friend sent me this today. A blog post by Ann Voskamp you can see the entire post here.  It’s so timely and spot on for so many of us… it seems there is a lot of hopelessness and sadness in the world.  I blog about beauty and decorating and not super deep things but the truth is since I shared about my family hardships, I have been getting a lot of emails from people going through similar situations. Pain. Tough stuff. This life isn’t easy, no matter the house or economic situation. Pain and sorrow are experienced by all in different seasons. But He sees us.  God sees me and He sees you.  I am going to leave it to the bible teacher to flesh out . . . I just wanted to share some snippets.  This encouraged me. Let’s try not to worry. And be scared.  Lean in to Him if you are going through a dark time. With open hands.

“Basic” New Build

IMG_1196

In reality, not all homes are historic farmhouses or custom build. My friend and client Lauren, an architect herself with discriminating taste, found herself ready to plan a home for her large family with a basic “surburban type” builder.  Not her dream situation but Lauren is smart enough to realize the budget and the square footage were enough to “do something with” for her young family so she approached it with a grateful heart, with THE most amazing attitude, and resourceful and creative ideas. Because after all, it’s a new house y’all and she realized that…but when you have been educated and work in custom and you know what all is out there it’s a little hard not to want to incorporate all of that custom “top of the line” knowledge. But as I mentioned these type of basic builders are NOT custom, they typically do not allow changes.  The granite choice, even the paint colors are SET IN STONE….very limited! I am not even going to publish the builders name because they do not want to offer all of these choices, that is not what they do..they are not custom build.

BUT Lauren is the epitome of lovely and kind and she had a few inside connections and was able to talk them into a few small changes. Like polishing the concrete floors downstairs! Which at first I was like “ummm I’m not sure NO stain???” But Lauren had worked with a builder that had done this and done this well and boy was she right…it looks amazing! Score one for “not your average basic build!”

IMG_0549

She also made some good basic choices like choosing to do all white walls. Add moldings and case out doors. AND Being a design guru she knows LIGHT IS EVERYTHING and choosing to do SW Alabaster walls AND trim provides a true backdrop for all of the color she knew she would be adding with rugs and textiles and her FIVE gorgeous children! And black doors…black or painted doors always elevate and this small thing (she knows the painters thought she was crazy) instantly added class.  And that’s just Lauren…she homeschools five kids and cooks constantly and yet she is walking class…in the most unsnotty, Godly way.  Her humble self deprecating humor keeps you from disliking her even know she is amazing and gorgeous and thin to boot! (sorry Lauren just had to say it you are thebomb.com)

IMG_2394

I love this photo of the girls in the schoolroom.  The light is a knock off of the classic 3 arm french light by Serge Mouille. Sofa from Craigslist, IKEA billly bookcases line the walls with doors.

And the kitchen! No marble countertops and its still gorgeous! I can’t wait to add some color and fabric to windows!

laurenkitchenwow

So most of the changes and arm twisting and cookie deliveries had to do with the kitchen of course!  Lauren was planning this on a budget…a subzero and professional range are not exactly budget but she scoured craigslist and the internet and found BOTH online…hours away but she got them and stored in her old garage for MONTHS.  The day those were installed I am sure she heard angels singing.  I love it when I see someone who actually cooks ALL DAY LONG and has a heart for hospitality gets these pricey items…she will truly use them! Fitting in to their basic builder cabinets wasn’t easy but patience, kindness and maybe cookies and brownies go a long way.  You def catch more flies with sugar than vinegar as shown here!

IMG_0428

Love the island.  Not sure how she got them to do the X but its awesome! Lights from Joss & Main, stools from amazon.  We will def being showing more of the kitchen down the road! (Once the children get off the island;) Notice the counter…again they aren’t marble but they look fine they really do the white subway and cabinets and hardware and appliances really set the tone..I can’t wait to show you more on her hardware etc. Notice how she used cup pulls on doors!

IMG_0081

Her wall of the back covers of “Cook’s Illustrated” look so good in these ribba frames..you can also really appreciate the trim work and alabaster paint and polished floors in these photos.  Lauren has a great tutorial she found on hanging ribba frames, shown here.

laurenribba

And those rugs…she scours ebay sources like Mystical Rugs and Gallery99! See how she taped out even the rug…blue tape is her friend y’all…it keeps us from making costly sizing mistakes!

IMG_0346

We also didn’t love the curve of the sofa but its a huge sofa and fits so many people which she DOES love….so the fig tree from TALL PLANTS and the gorgeous lamps (TJMaxx yall) really distract from that curve.

IMG_2673

That fig is BIG, like 8-9 feet but the room needed it and candle the size.  They are so nice at Tall Plants and I am always amazed at the selection of topiaries, ferns and of course fiddle leaf figs..the day I was there last, they had two matching mega ones headed for the River Oaks Country Club. And they deliver around Houston.

These chairs will be slipcovered. Love that molding around fireplace.  I can’t wait to see what kind of art she creates for over mantle.  It will be abstract and have color.

IMG_1033

I love how she has taped out her plans to add more trim for a faux paneled wall look to dress up the white walls in a subtle way. The ottoman is from craigslist as is sofa…Lauren’s sister found it on Austin Craigslist..it is a restoration hardware piece that has been recovered custom and then listed on craigslist….Lauren should do a Craigslist commercial! It’s a Kelly Wearstler fabric…ok now we don’t like you Lauren!;;

Lauren’s style is def NEW TRADITIONAL with classic rugs and colors like blues mixed with a bit of her own modern art and chic lighting. She is the master at sourcing good sconces.

IMG_1354

I adore her master bath…the sconces are from Savoy House, Monroe Collection… and art from ebay! Absolute black granite was the only choice but wise choices on faucets and lights and backsplash saved the day.

laurenbath

The kids look a little over the process but I love watching Lauren enjoy each step and get in no hurry making things perfect…she knows to get the bones right and move slowly doing things right the first time….so opposite my “lipstick on a pig” move fast tendencies…i love how my clients sharpen and teach me!

IMG_0322

Thank you Lauren and family for letting me share your home…Remember y’all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.  It takes time to build a thoughtful and collected home.  And that is okay. More than okay..it’s a blessing.
